February 13, 2018, is Maha Shivaratri. It is a day to offer Lord Shiva all that is sacred and to be in tune with His energies.

During Maha Shivaratri, Lord Shiva is at the pinnacle of His presence in the material Earth plane. We should put all our thoughts and focus in prayers for peace in the World, peace within and without. Maha Sivarathiri is the great night of Shiva when His devotees are reminded of the time when He walked on earth and in heaven. It is a time to merge oneself in the infinite light.

Many ages back, Lord Shiva manifested as an infinite pillar of light on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of Phalguna month. On that day, it is believed that He transcended all the worlds and manifested Himself in all the Lingas in all of the temples and homes where they worship Him. That is the night observed as the night of Shivaratri.

Tuning into and Harnessing Shiva’s Energies

Shivarathri is an auspicious time to connect to Lord Shiva and the Guru within, both to receive the blessings of the great Guru Lord Shiva, and to express love, appreciation and sincere devotion to the Divine within.

For one week leading into Shivaratri, starting Feb 6, spend some time in the mornings and evenings, meditating on Lord Shiva and chanting Om Namah Shivaya. These regular meditations will purify you at many levels and will build the energies up. If you are undertaking this process, do write to us to receive any specific instructions.

On the day of Shivaratri, if possible, fast the whole day, taking only fruits & milk. Keep yourself awake and be in meditation as much as possible during the night. Perform puja for Lord Shiva and chant mantras of Lord Shiva. Express your thanks and devotion at the feet of the Lord by chanting the mantra Om Namah Shivaya as many times as you can. You can chant the following mantra during the night.

Om Shivaya Namaha
Om Namah Shivaya Namaha
Om Sadha Shivaya Namaha
Om Eshwaraya Namaha
Om Rudraya Neelakandaya
Maha Shivaya Namaha

Memory of a previous Shivaratri Puja

In 2009, Adiyargal Shanmuga & Adi Sakthi performed the Shivaratri Puja in New York with devotees. The energies were exceptionally high, with a lot of singing, bhajans, and the making of Shiva Lingam from Vibuthi (sacred ash). Watch this video for those powerful moments.
