13 Nov - 3 Dec: Kanchipuram and Chennai, the City of a thousand temples and final blessings

babaji-altarThe city of Kanchipuram is well known in South India.  This is simply because of the vast amount of temples concentrated in such a small area.  The city itself is 75 km (46 miles) from Chennai, a major metropolitan center.  Though there were hundreds of powerful and tempting sites to visit, we were focused on seeing only a select few.  Swamiji and Amma were guided to visit a Divine Mother Temple constructed by Adi Shakaracharya,  a 3500 year old temple dedicated to Shiva and the last of the six abodes of Lord Murugan.  And later on, we were again guided to a powerful ashram of Mahavatar Babaji.

12 Nov: Trichy, Meeting with a Siddha Master

trichy2Steep rock walls rise above from center of the city.  The cliffs around the mountain dwarf nearby buildings.  Two massive humps resemble a wide back and head.  Atop the head sits the famous pilgrimage destination of Trichy, short for Tiruchirappalli.  This temple sits central on the head and forms a magnificent crown. The trail leading to temple’s sanctum resembles the great sweeping trunk of Lord Ganesh.

11 Nov: Palani, Murugan's Mountaintop Sadhana

palani3Another day broke and surprisingly, the sun was out to greet us.  We were in Palani, a small town in South India and set to visit another temple of Lord Murugan.  The town of Palani is known well, both for the temple and for the challenging climb to reach it.  Pilgrims visiting here must battle steep and rocky stairs cut into the mountainside. With the sun beating down, we realized this morning would be tougher than we initially thought.  Swami remarked, that though the mountains of the north were thousands of miles away, we would be seeing another steep ascent.

9, 10 Nov: Thiruchendur, Murugan's seaside blessings

thiru-homaAfter spending a day and a half battling treacherous and flooded roads, the monsoon clouds seemed to break up in a very timely fashion.  It was just after dusk when we arrived at the Murugan temple in Thiruchendur.  Waves from the Indian Ocean were swelling and crashing on the sands below.  This was the fourth of six of Murugan’s abodes which Babaji had directed the group to visit.  Great blessings and even more surprises were again in store for everyone. Swamiji and Amma excitedly entered the seaside temple carrying everyone in their heart.

7, 8 Nov: Thanjavur and the Mother in Madurai

Picture_001More rain greeted us as we steped into the foggy morning.  Barefoot, we walked through a massive red stone archway.  Above this gate, a tower rose towards the clouds and displayed many traditional images and figures.  Walking in the mud, we were all silent, in preparation to visit the “Gate-keeper” of the Divine Mother.

4 - 6 Nov : Kumbakonam, Mother's abode and Babaji's guidance
kb-homaWe all awoke early on the 4th, eager to check out of our staying quarters.  We will aptly call our lodge “Bug City.”  Needless to say, after an endless night full of an onslaught from mosquitoes and other unidentified disturbances we were ready to move out.  The group took breakfast and went to the temple in town, giving thanks that we survived the night.

3 Nov : Chidambaram, Temple of Dancing Lord Shiva
chidambaramThe Chidambaram Temple in the state of Tamil Nadu spans over 40 acres in the heart of the city of the same name.  It is a massive temple complex, and justifiably so, as it is home to Lord Shiva in his form as the Divine cosmic dancer, Nataraja.  The center of the temple is the sanctum and from the outside it cannot be missed.  It is a towering structure, with massive carved stone figures peering from great heights.  Nearby, there is a temple dedicated to the Divine Mother Parvati and just past that is a large rectangular pond that is in place for bathing ceremonies for all of the idols. Elaborate stone work and imagery marked the uncountable pillars and in the deep and shadowy corners, many bats furiously batted their wings in search of food.
