Gurukul Living

gurukul_2From the outside a gurukul may initially look to be just a school where shishyas or students study spirituality under a Guru.  Literally Guru means dispeller of darkness and Kul refers to his domain, from the Sanskrit word kula, meaning extended family.  It is a place where the shishyas reside together as a family, as equals, irrespective of their social standing, age or race.  Delving deeper, gurukul living is an important part of the spiritual growth of any seeker.

The gurukul way of life serves as an example of how one can live in the modern world, while still seeking to experience their own true, selfless nature. The experience of living this way, whether for a few days or many years, is invaluable, the experience of which can be carried into the normal everyday life of the person. It can act as guideline for children, students, householders, families and the elderly alike.  This way of life includes acts of service and compassion, which help to train the individual to perceive the deeper aspects of spirituality within their life.   The gurukul system is one of the most holistic systems for spirituality as it seeks to provide the individual with an ideal atmosphere for spiritual growth and development, learning not just from spoken word but from undeniable personal experience.  All aspects of the gurukul system are designed to be practical, allowing the individual to cultivate a balance and continually progress in spirituality, uninterrupted by the illusory nature of our world.

In the gurukul style of study, there is an equal balance of self-discovery as well as direct guidance and teachings from the Guru. There is much time given for seekers to explore the finer aspects of spirituality, while at the same time receiving individual guidance in their sadhana and spiritual routine.  Ideally, after one has completed their stay at the ashram, however long or short that may be, they should be able to continue their evolved spiritual practice anywhere in the world.
Amma, Swami TeachingMany people think that gurukul life is reserved only for sannyasis or swamis or people who are renouncing their worldly lives.  This is simply not true.  Every soul can benefit from the teachings instilled from this way of life.  The fundamental aspects of this type of life may be incorporated and weaved into the lives of all people, even living away from an ashram or with one's family.  This way of life can be adapted by anyone who desires truth and seeks union with God.  These are the teachings of gurukul living directly from Maha Avatar Babaji as He once taught Lahiri Mahasaya.  Amma and Swami are a living example,  they are husband and wife with children, and are able to balance ashram living with family life.

The Divine Masters that have guided Amma and Swami have used this way of life as a foundation for their teachings.  Amma, Swami, their children and close disciples are living examples of this lifestyle.  If there are any seekers who want to learn more please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
