From the outside a gurukul may initially look to be just a school where shishyas or students study spirituality under a Guru. Literally Guru means dispeller of darkness and Kul refers to his domain, from the Sanskrit word kula, meaning extended family. It is a place where the shishyas reside together as a family, as equals, irrespective of their social standing, age or race. Delving deeper, gurukul living is an important part of the spiritual growth of any seeker.

No matter who you are or what you do in life you can benefit from a Guru when you are travelling on the spiritual path. We all begin as lost wanderers in the ocean of life. We seek purpose and fulfillment. We accumulate karmas, which are binding. Until the karmas are exhausted, our soul endlessly goes through the cycle of life, death and rebirth. It can be never ending, without proper guidance, without Divine guidance. On our own we seek fulfillment in wealth, in status, in relationships, but ultimately we must realize the illusory quality of these pursuits. It is only through a Guru, through Divine guidance, that we find true purpose and true fulfillment.

The act of charity is written about in many ancient texts and divine masters teach about the benefits of this noble action. Its influence on spiritual growth is not to be underestimated. A true donation, a noble act, is giving without expectation. For the spiritual and ethical person, the chance to give selflessly is the chance to do the work of the divine. It is only through divine grace that we have the ability to give from our hearts.
