What is Ekatvam

EkatvamEkatvam is a beautiful Sanskrit word which means Unity or Oneness with Divine Consciousness. The word is mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita (The Divine Song of God) in 6:31 as follows:

sarva-bhuta-sthitam yo mam
bhajaty ekatvam asthitah
sarvatha vartamano 'pi
sa yogi mayi vartate

Translation: The yogi who knows that I and the Supersoul within all creatures are one worships Me and remains always in Me in all circumstances.

The underlying consciousness in all beings is One, we are all One. The soul of an individual being is the same as the soul of the Supreme Self, or God. This soul, in the human birth, is clouded by veils of ignorance and ego. When all these are removed, there is the realization of the brilliance of the soul. The most appropriate comparison is that of an earthen pot in the ocean. It is holding a small portion of the ocean water. The water in the pot is the same as the water in the ocean, only separated by the earthen container. When the boundaries melt, all becomes one.

sunsetIn a similar fashion, all of us are One. The human ego has erected several barriers between the individual self and the Supreme Self, and between individuals. As one starts to dismantle these barriers, they begin to get glimpses of the Supreme Self, and eventually merge and become One with the Supreme Self, and in the process, become One with all beings, with all of the Universe. This is Ekatvam. This is the realization of "Aham Brahmasmi" or "I am God".

This Ekatvam transcends religions, traditions and cultures. It is far beyond the limitations created by the human mind. It is not just the Eastern traditions that recognize Ekatvam. All the religions of the world clearly identify the underlying Oneness between all beings and the Universal Supreme Self that is God.

Ekatvam is a realization of Unity, that we are woven together through our hearts and consciousness.
